For sporting and outdoor enthusiasts, the Wine2Whales Mountain Bike Race combines competitive physical activity with the very best of Cape Town’s beautiful scenery. The race takes place over three days (from Friday, 12 November to Sunday, 14 November), in which teams of 2 cyclists cover about 230km of the Cape Winelands, including 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, various historic roads and passes, and nature conservation areas, before finishing up in Hermanus.

For the less active and more festive, this weekend (5 to 7 November) is the last weekend of the Cape Town International Festival at the Good Hope Centre. There are more than 100 exhibitors from six different countries and foreign manufacturers selling direct to the public, including fashion wear, home décor, leather garments, jewellery and much more besides.

Finally, later this month marks the start of the world famous Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. You could start off by catching one of over 40 films being shown at the Encounters Film Festival, now in its 12th year of bringing some of the best local and international documentaries to South Africa. Highly-rated films include “16th Man” (a collaboration between Morgan Freeman and our very own South African director Cliff Bestall), “RFK in the Land of Apartheid: A Ripple of Hope”, and the hilarious “Monty Python: Almost the Truth”, which documents the rise and rise of the world-renowned comedy ensemble.

Dance fanatics can check out the Baxter Dance Festival, featuring work by a variety of dance companies and choreographers in the Western Cape. The main programme (25 to 28 August) consists of pieces by established professional companies and commissioned works, while the fringe programme (29 August) includes work by young emerging artists. For nature-lovers and horticulturists, the increasingly popular Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show is a must-see. It is hosted annually by the Clanwilliam Wild Flower Association in the Old Duth Reformed Church in Clanwilliam (a national mounument since 1978), and boasts an incredible display of more than 360 species. Activities include concerts, art and food stalls, as well as a street carnival.

Finally, if you still have some energy left at the end of the weekend, it’s not too late to sign up for the Blisters for Bread Charity Walk on Sunday 29 August, which aims to raise funds to feed hungry school kids throughout the Western Cape. Over 14 000 people are expected to participate in this year’s event (including some local celebs). With the walk beginning in at Green Point Stadium and winding its way through the most picturesque parts of the city, this is certainly one of the most scenic and healthy ways to do your bit for those in need.
